Discord has doubled the maximum file size available to users on its free plan. Non-Nitro users can now upload files up to 20MB, compared with the previous 10MB limit.
The change was included in an update to Discord’s File Attachments FAQ published on August 13, and the company says it is also changing how file sizes are checked across different platforms.
One of the biggest changes affects mobile uploads. Previously, Discord could attempt to compress a file before checking whether the resulting file was within the upload limit. This meant users could sometimes see different results depending on the device they were using.
Discord has now moved mobile to the same pre-compression file-size check already used on desktop. This means the original file size is what determines whether an upload meets the limit.
The change should make the upload process more predictable, but it can also have different effects depending on the platform. Discord says desktop and iOS users should generally find uploading easier, while Android users may reach the limit more often because source files can be larger.
What Files Can You Upload to Discord?
Discord supports a wide range of common file formats, including images, documents, audio files and videos.
Some of the examples listed by Discord include:
- JPEG images
- PDF documents
- MP3 audio
- MOV video
- MP4 video encoded with H.264, HEVC/H.265 or AV1
Users can also attach multiple images, videos or GIFs in a single message, which Discord can display together in a mosaic layout.
Free Users Get 20MB
The new 20MB limit applies to users who do not have Discord Nitro. Discord notes that it is also experimenting with different upload limits, so some users may have access to larger limits during testing.
For users who regularly need to send larger files, Discord offers higher limits through its paid plans. Nitro Basic supports uploads of up to 50MB, while Nitro supports files of up to 500MB.
Discord also has settings that affect how attachments are handled. On desktop and browser, users can choose how images are displayed when they are uploaded directly, while mobile includes options such as video quality and data-saving modes.
