The United States will allow Nvidia’s H200 processors to be exported to China with a 25 percent fee added to each sale.
President Donald Trump announced the decision on Monday, settling a long debate over whether American chip companies should continue selling powerful AI hardware to China or block the technology entirely. What remains uncertain is whether China will actually buy the chips, since its government has been pushing local companies to avoid U.S. technology.
Nvidia’s stock gained after the announcement, rising in after-hours trading following an earlier report that hinted at the policy shift. Trump said he had already informed China’s President Xi Jinping of the plan and that Xi reacted positively.
The Commerce Department is now working through the final details, and the same rules are expected to apply to other chipmakers such as AMD and Intel.
