Wikipedia has officially banned editors from using artificial intelligence to write or rewrite articles, marking a major shift in how the platform handles AI-generated content.
The decision comes after growing concerns that AI-written material often fails to meet Wikipedia’s strict content standards.
According to updated guidelines introduced last week, editors are no longer allowed to rely on AI tools to create or significantly modify articles. Wikipedia says AI-generated content tends to violate key policies, including accuracy, verifiability, and neutrality.
However, the platform is not completely blocking AI use. Editors can still use AI for limited tasks, such as basic copyediting or translating articles from other languages into English. Even then, strict conditions apply. AI tools must not introduce new information, and editors must have enough knowledge of the original language to verify translations for accuracy.
Wikipedia also clarified that writing style alone will not be enough to accuse someone of using AI. Editors are advised to focus on whether content follows the platform’s core policies rather than relying on linguistic patterns.
The move follows months of challenges with AI-generated content flooding the platform. In response, the Wikipedia community has already introduced faster deletion processes for low-quality articles and launched initiatives like WikiProject AI Cleanup to identify and remove problematic content.
The new rule was proposed by a community member and received strong support from editors. It aims to reduce harmful uses of AI while still allowing limited, responsible applications of the technology.
