Anthropic is changing how its Claude Code subscriptions work, making it more expensive for users who rely on third-party tools like OpenClaw.

The company has informed customers that starting April 4, subscribers will no longer be able to use their existing subscription limits when accessing Claude through external tools. Instead, those users will need to switch to a separate pay-as-you-go pricing model for that usage.

The update was revealed through a customer email that surfaced on Hacker News, in which Anthropic explained that the change takes effect immediately with OpenClaw and will soon apply to all third-party integrations. This marks a significant shift in how developers interact with Claude Code, especially those who depend on external harnesses to extend its functionality.

Anthropic’s head of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, addressed the move publicly, explaining that the company’s subscription plans were not designed to handle the heavy and unpredictable usage patterns often seen with third-party tools. He said the change is part of a broader effort to manage growth more sustainably and ensure long-term reliability for customers.

The timing of the announcement has drawn attention, particularly as OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger recently joined OpenAI. Despite his move, OpenClaw will remain an open source project with backing from OpenAI. Steinberger suggested that he and others attempted to persuade Anthropic to reconsider the pricing shift, but were only able to delay its rollout briefly. He also criticized the company, accusing it of restricting open source access after incorporating similar features into its own ecosystem.

Anthropic, however, pushed back on that narrative. Cherny emphasized that the Claude Code team supports open-source development and pointed to recent contributions to improve OpenClaw’s efficiency. He maintained that the decision is driven by engineering and infrastructure constraints rather than competitive positioning, adding that refunds are being offered to users who may have misunderstood the original subscription scope.
