WhatsApp has launched a new AI feature called “Writing Help” that allows users to rephrase and adjust the tone of their messages with just a tap.
The tool can make text sound more professional, casual, funny, or supportive, depending on the user’s choice.
The feature works by showing a new pencil icon in the message composer. When tapped, WhatsApp suggests alternative rewrites, giving users different ways to express the same message. For example, a simple note like “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa” could be rephrased as “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard” or even a playful “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”
Privacy is a key part of this rollout. WhatsApp says the tool runs on Meta’s Private Processing technology, meaning neither WhatsApp nor Meta can see the original messages or the AI-generated suggestions. The feature is off by default, and users need to enable it in settings before use.
“Writing Help” is currently rolling out to English-speaking users on both iOS and Android in select countries, with wider availability expected soon. The update brings WhatsApp closer to integrating smart writing assistance directly into everyday chats, reducing the need for external AI apps.
