The FBI has confirmed that the Chinese state-backed hacking group known as Salt Typhoon has compromised at least 200 U.S. companies and expanded its cyber espionage campaign to more than 80 countries.

Officials warn this is one of the most far-reaching attacks on critical infrastructure in recent years.

Initially, Salt Typhoon was known for breaching major telecom providers such as AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen, gaining access to sensitive call and message data. Investigators now say the hackers also targeted industries including defense, lodging, and transportation, exploiting vulnerabilities in routers and network devices to steal communications and metadata.

In response, the FBI, NSA, CISA, and international allies issued a joint advisory urging organizations to strengthen defenses with zero-trust frameworks, vulnerability patching, and proactive threat hunting. Security officials caution that the campaign is still active and that many compromised systems may remain undetected.
