Spotify is testing a new feature that gives users more control over the music they hear.

The feature, called Prompted Playlists, is launching first in New Zealand and allows listeners to create playlists simply by typing what they want to listen to.

Users can be as detailed or as vague as they like, and Spotify’s AI will build a playlist based on their instructions and listening history.

This feature goes a step further by letting users set these playlists to refresh automatically. That means you can create your own version of Discover Weekly, but tailored around a prompt you choose. Earlier this year, Spotify added the option to prioritize certain genres in Discover Weekly, but Prompted Playlists offer a much deeper level of control.

Prompted Playlists are part of Spotify’s bigger push to give listeners more ways to guide the platform’s recommendations. The AI DJ received a similar update in May, allowing users to give voice prompts to shape what it plays. Other platforms are moving in the same direction, too. Instagram recently rolled out a feature that lets users tell its algorithm what kind of posts they want to see.

With Prompted Playlists, Spotify hopes to give people a more active role in shaping their music experience, blending personal taste with the platform’s AI in a way that feels more flexible and more fun.
