Discord has pushed back its plan to roll out age verification worldwide, saying it will now wait until the second half of 2026 instead of launching next month as first announced.
In a blog post, Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy admitted the company did not clearly explain its plans. Many users believed Discord would require everyone to submit face scans or upload government IDs just to use the platform. He said that was never the intention, but acknowledged that the confusion showed Discord failed to communicate properly.
Before expanding age verification globally, Discord says it will make several changes. The company plans to add more ways for users to verify their age, including using a credit card. It will also publish documentation listing every third-party verification vendor it works with. In addition, Discord will introduce “spoiler channels” as an alternative to age-restricted channels, giving communities another way to limit access to certain topics. The company also promised a technical blog post explaining how its age estimation systems work.
In countries where age verification is already required by law, such as the UK and Australia, and soon Brazil, adults who want to access age-restricted content will still need to verify their age through an approved vendor like k-ID.
The delay follows strong backlash from users after Discord announced that accounts would default to a “teen-appropriate” experience unless verified as adults. Discord says this change would only affect about 10 percent of accounts, since most users do not engage with age-restricted content, change safety settings, or are already identified as adults through its internal systems.
The company also shared more details about those internal systems. Discord says it already uses automated safety tools to detect spam networks, prevent coordinated raids, and stop abusive behavior. These systems are powered by its rules engine, which it recently open-sourced under the name Osprey for other platforms to use.

With the rollout now delayed, Discord appears focused on rebuilding trust, adding more transparency, and offering flexible verification options before expanding age checks to users worldwide.
