The Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging standard is getting a major upgrade to improve how audio messages sound.
The latest version, called Universal Profile 3.1, includes support for a new audio format known as xHE-AAC.
According to the GSMA, this update allows for better compression and clearer playback of audio content. That means when users send voice messages, sound clips, or even interact with chatbots that use sound, the audio will be clearer and more natural.
This upgrade helps make voice notes and other audio content easier to share and listen to, even in low bandwidth conditions. It’s a small but important step toward making RCS messaging a more modern and full-featured alternative to regular SMS.
