Google has introduced a new AI feature in Google Photos that lets users turn still images into short video clips using its Veo 3 video-generation model.
The feature is now available to free users in the U.S., though the animations currently do not include sound.
Users can access this tool through the Create tab in the Photos app, where a new “Photo to video” option provides two styles: Subtle movements for realistic motion and I’m feeling lucky for fun, surprising effects. Free-tier users get a limited number of animations each day, while Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can generate more frequent and advanced results.
The Create tab also brings together other AI tools such as Remix (which transforms photos into anime, comic, sketch, or 3D art), along with existing options like Collage, Highlight videos, and Cinematic photos.
Google first unveiled Veo 3 at its I/O developer conference in May, touting major improvements in resolution and video quality compared to the earlier Veo 2. While advanced versions with sound generation are still reserved for premium subscribers, this rollout gives millions of users a chance to bring their photo memories to life at no cost.
