Google Photos is getting a useful new backup option that will make it easier for users to export their photos and videos without downloading their entire library every time.
Google Photos has long supported exports through Google Takeout, but the process has mostly been an all-or-nothing option. That means users who wanted to keep a separate copy of their photo library had to export everything at once, which could take a lot of time and storage space, especially if they had years of photos and videos saved.
Google is now improving that experience with a new feature called “Incremental Takeout for Photos.” The feature allows users to create one full export first, followed by scheduled exports that only include new or updated content added since the last successful backup.
According to Google, the first scheduled export will include all selected photos and albums. After that, future exports will only include items that were uploaded, backed up, created, or edited since the previous export. This should help users save both time and storage space when maintaining a separate backup of their Google Photos library.
The new option is available through Google Takeout. Users need to select only Google Photos as the export option, then choose scheduled exports. Google says exports can be delivered every two months for the next year, with file sizes available up to 50GB.
