Google is continuing its shift away from traditional link-based search by expanding its AI-powered features, making Search feel more like a conversational chatbot.
The company is upgrading AI Overviews with Gemini 3 and introducing smoother follow-up questions that let users dive deeper without starting a new search.
With the update, users can now move directly from an AI-generated summary into a full conversation using AI Mode. According to Robby Stein, the goal is to give users “a quick snapshot when you need it, and a deeper conversation when you want it.” Switching between Overviews and AI Mode is designed to be simple, requiring little more than scrolling and typing.
(1/2) Today we’re starting to test a new way to seamlessly go deeper in AI Mode directly from the Search results page on mobile, globally.

This brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind – no matter how long or complex – and find exactly what you… pic.twitter.com/mcCS7oT2FI
Google is also upgrading the intelligence behind AI Overviews. Gemini 3 is now the default model powering AI summaries worldwide, which Stein says will deliver more accurate and higher-quality answers than earlier versions. Previous AI-generated summaries received mixed feedback from users, prompting Google to refine its approach.
