WhatsApp is rolling out a new security feature called Strict Account Settings, designed to protect users who may be at a higher risk of cyberattacks, such as journalists, activists, and public figures.

When enabled, the feature automatically blocks media files and attachments from unknown senders and silences calls from contacts not saved in your phone. This reduces the risk of spyware or malicious files being delivered through unexpected messages.

Strict Account Settings also limit several other functions. Link previews are disabled, non-contacts are prevented from adding you to groups, and your profile photo, “about” info, and online status are hidden from people you don’t know. WhatsApp clearly notes that this mode is not meant for everyone and should only be turned on if you believe you may be targeted by sophisticated cyber campaigns.

The Strict Account Settings feature will roll out globally in the coming weeks. Users can enable it by going to Settings → Privacy → Advanced → Strict Account Settings.
