Google is rolling out a set of new features aimed at making it easier for users to share local knowledge on Maps, with a strong focus on simplifying how photos and videos are contributed.

The biggest update introduces Gemini-powered captions, which can automatically generate descriptions when users upload images or videos of places.

When users choose photos to share, Gemini analyzes the content and suggests a caption, giving them a quick starting point. Users still have full control and can edit or remove the generated text before posting. For now, this feature is available in English on iOS in the United States, with plans to expand to more regions and Android devices in the coming months.

Google is also improving how users find content to share. If media access is enabled, Maps will surface photos and videos from recent experiences directly within the “Contribute” tab. From there, users can quickly select and upload images without needing to search through their gallery.

At the same time, the company is adding new ways for contributors to track their activity and progress. Users will now see their total points displayed more clearly, along with highlighted Local Guide levels on their profiles. These levels are earned by adding reviews, uploading photos, answering questions, and verifying information on the platform.

Achievement badges have also been refreshed to make them easier to understand, helping users quickly see whether someone is a top contributor in areas like photography or fact-checking. High-level contributors will now stand out even more with updated gold-colored profile designs.

These updates are designed to support the platform’s large contributor base, which now exceeds 500 million people. Since Google Maps relies heavily on user-generated content to keep listings accurate and up to date, the company is making it faster and simpler for users to share their experiences.
