Google has rolled out a dedicated Gemini app for Mac, making it easier to use its AI assistant without jumping between apps or browser tabs.
With a simple Option + Space shortcut, you can open a floating chat bubble anywhere on your desktop and start interacting with Gemini instantly.
The app is designed to stay out of your way while still being available whenever you need it. You can ask questions, get quick help, or even share what’s on your screen so Gemini can respond based on what you’re viewing. Before doing that, you’ll need to grant permission for system access so the assistant can pull relevant context from your active window.
The overall experience feels similar to Apple’s evolving Spotlight, which is also becoming more action-focused with AI features built in. With this launch, Google is clearly stepping into the race to make Gemini a go-to desktop assistant, competing with tools from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity that aim to integrate AI deeply into everyday computing.

However, some competitors still offer more advanced capabilities. Apps like ChatGPT and Claude on Mac can perform actions on your device, going beyond just answering queries, which is something Gemini is still catching up on.
Just like on mobile and the web, the Mac version of Gemini supports uploading files, photos, and documents from Google Drive. You can use it to generate images, videos, and even music, while also accessing your previous conversations linked to your Google account, making it easy to continue where you left off.
