The European Commission is preparing a new antitrust investigation into Meta Platforms, focusing on how the company has added artificial intelligence features to WhatsApp.
According to the Financial Times, the probe will examine how Meta integrated its Meta AI system into the messaging app earlier this year. This comes as regulators across Europe are paying closer attention to how major tech companies use generative AI on large platforms.
Meta AI, a chatbot and virtual assistant, has been available in WhatsApp since March 2025 for users across European markets. The company told Reuters it has not received formal details of the investigation and referred to an earlier statement regarding Italy’s inquiry, which it described as “unfounded.”
