Discord has confirmed that it will begin enforcing age verification globally from March 2026.
Under the new system, all accounts will automatically be placed into a “teen-appropriate experience” unless users can prove they are adults.
According to the company, most adult users will not need to take any action. Discord uses an age inference system that analyzes factors like account age, device signals, and general activity patterns across communities. The company says it does not read private messages or message content when estimating a user’s age.
If Discord cannot confidently determine that an account belongs to an adult, users may be asked to verify manually. This can be done either through a short facial age scan using the device camera or by uploading a government-issued ID through a third-party verification service. Discord claims facial scans are processed on the device and not stored, while ID data is deleted after verification.
Accounts that remain unverified will face restrictions. These users will not be able to access age-restricted servers or channels, speak in livestream-style Stage channels, or view sensitive content. Direct messages from unfamiliar users will be filtered automatically, and warnings will appear for new friend requests.
Existing age-restricted servers will also be hidden from unverified users, even if they were previously members. Discord says such servers will appear blocked until age verification is completed, and users will not be able to join new restricted servers without confirming their age.
