Freedom Mobile has confirmed a data breach after attackers broke into its customer account management platform and accessed personal information belonging to an undisclosed number of customers.
The company, which serves more than 2.2 million subscribers and provides coverage to 99% of Canadians, detected the intrusion on October 23. Freedom says the breach occurred after a threat actor used the stolen account of a subcontractor to access customer records.
According to the company’s notice, the exposed data includes names, home addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and Freedom Mobile account numbers. Freedom blocked the suspicious accounts and IP addresses shortly after discovering the unauthorized access and says it has implemented additional security measures.
While the company says it has found no evidence that the stolen data has been misused, it is warning affected customers to be cautious. Freedom advises users to avoid clicking suspicious links, ignore unsolicited messages asking for personal information, and regularly check their accounts for unusual activity.
A company spokesperson told BleepingComputer that the incident did not impact network operations and clarified that this was not a ransomware attack. However, Freedom did not reveal how many customers were affected.
This is not the first time the carrier has faced a data exposure incident. In 2019, Freedom confirmed that a third-party vendor had left an unsecured customer support database accessible online, exposing information belonging to roughly 15,000 customers.
