Britain has issued its largest penalty yet under the country’s new online safety rules, fining a major adult website operator for failing to protect children from harmful content.
Media regulator Ofcom announced on Thursday that AVS Group Ltd, which runs 18 adult websites, has been fined 1 million Pounds ($1.33 million) for not having strong age-verification systems in place. The company was also fined an additional 50,000 pounds for ignoring Ofcom’s information requests during the investigation.
According to the regulator, AVS’s age-check process was not considered “highly effective,” which is now a strict requirement under the Online Safety Act. The penalty could grow even larger, with AVS risking 1,000 pounds per day in additional fines if the company does not implement proper age-verification measures within 72 hours.
