Adobe has confirmed that it is shutting down Adobe Animate, bringing an end to one of the longest-running tools in digital animation.
The company says the app will no longer be available for purchase after March 1, 2026, as it believes newer platforms now better meet the needs of creators.
Existing users will still have time to access their work. Adobe says customers can download their Animate files until March 1, 2027, while enterprise customers will have access until March 1, 2029. The app will remain downloadable and supported during this period, but once the deadlines pass, access will end completely.
Adobe Animate has a long history that dates back to 1996, when it was first released as FutureSplash Animator. It later became known as Flash after being acquired by Macromedia, and then Adobe Flash Professional after Adobe purchased Macromedia in 2005. In 2015, Adobe rebranded the software as Adobe Animate as web technologies began moving away from Flash.
While Adobe says Creative Cloud Pro users can turn to other tools like After Effects or Adobe Express to replace some of Animate’s features, many creators are unhappy with the decision. Animators behind popular projects, including the creators of Chikn Nuggit and Salad Fingers creator David Firth, say they still rely on Animate for their work. Others in the animation and game industry warn that shutting down the app could put jobs at risk and make older projects harder to preserve.
