Elon Musk has announced a major move that brings some of his biggest companies under one roof. SpaceX has officially acquired xAI, the artificial intelligence company that also owns the social media platform X. With this decision, Musk is combining rockets, satellites, AI, and global communication into a single, tightly connected organization.
Musk says the goal is to prepare for the future of artificial intelligence, which he believes is quickly running into a serious problem on Earth. Modern AI systems require massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of electricity and water for cooling. According to him, meeting the growing demand for AI power using only land-based infrastructure will place too much pressure on communities, power grids, and the environment.
His solution is to move large parts of AI computing into space. Musk argues that space offers nearly constant solar energy, far more room to expand, and fewer limits compared to Earth. By placing AI-focused satellites in orbit, these systems could generate computing power using sunlight without relying on traditional power plants or cooling systems.
At the center of this plan is SpaceX’s Starship rocket. Musk says Starship is the first vehicle capable of launching the huge amount of equipment needed for space-based data centers. With frequent launches and much higher payload capacity than previous rockets, Starship could deliver thousands, and eventually millions, of tons of hardware into orbit every year.
Musk estimates that a large network of AI satellites could add around 100 gigawatts of computing power annually, with a long-term path toward even higher levels. He believes that within the next two to three years, generating AI compute in space could become cheaper than doing it on Earth. If that happens, companies would be able to train AI models and process data at a scale that is currently impossible.
The vision does not stop in Earth’s orbit. Musk also described plans that include building permanent facilities on the Moon, using local resources to manufacture satellites, and deploying them deeper into space. These capabilities could eventually support long-term human presence on the Moon and the growth of cities on Mars.
By merging SpaceX and xAI, Musk is creating a single ecosystem that connects artificial intelligence, space launch systems, satellite internet, direct-to-mobile communication, and real-time global information sharing. He sees this as a step toward expanding human intelligence beyond Earth and ensuring that future technological growth is not limited by the planet’s resources.

Musk says the technologies developed through this merger could help humanity better understand the universe, support billions of people on Earth, and lay the foundation for becoming a multi-planetary civilization.
