X has launched Chat, a new and improved version of its direct messaging service that now offers encrypted conversations and several upgraded communication tools.

The company announced the rollout on Friday, and the feature is already available on iOS and the web. An Android version is expected to arrive soon. Chat replaces the old messaging system on X, but all previous messages will still appear in the updated interface.

The main highlight of Chat is end-to-end encryption for both messages and shared files. However, X explains that this encryption does not cover metadata like who the message was sent to or when it was delivered. The company also admits there is currently no way for users to detect man-in-the-middle attacks, meaning a malicious insider or even X could technically intercept a chat without users being aware. X says it is working on new tools that will help people verify message authenticity and confirm device identity in the future.

Chat also brings several privacy-focused options. Users can set messages to disappear automatically after a chosen time, receive alerts when someone screenshots a conversation, or completely block screenshots. Messages can be edited or deleted, and the platform now supports both voice and video calls. Voice notes are expected to be added soon.

X, previously known as Twitter, first introduced encrypted direct messages in 2023 but paused the feature earlier this year to make improvements. The updated version has now returned under the new name Chat, offering a more advanced and privacy-friendly experience for users.
