X (formerly Twitter) is rolling out its new encrypted direct messaging feature, XChat, to more users, moving beyond the initial premium-only access.
The update brings stronger privacy protections and a set of new tools to the platform’s messaging system.
With end-to-end encryption, XChat lets users send secure messages while also supporting group chats, media sharing, pinned messages, and read/unread controls. The feature requires a four-digit code to access chats, similar to privacy apps like Signal. X is also working on a vanishing mode, which will automatically delete messages after a set time.
The new chat system is accessible under a dedicated “Chat” tab, while older, unencrypted DMs remain in a separate section. On mobile, XChat appears above Communities, and on desktop, it sits above Message Requests.
X first began testing XChat in beta earlier this year. Elon Musk has described the system as built on a new architecture with “Bitcoin-style encryption,” though some experts remain skeptical about its security claims. Still, this wider release signals X’s push to become a more complete super app, combining social networking with private communication and other future services.
