Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Server 2022 will reach the end of mainstream support on October 13, 2026.

While no new non-security updates or feature improvements will be provided after that date, the operating system will move into its extended support phase and continue receiving free monthly security updates through October 14, 2031.

Windows Server 2022 was first introduced in March 2021 before becoming generally available in September 2021 as a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release with a planned 10-year support lifecycle. According to Microsoft, the October 2026 security update will be the final update delivered under mainstream support before the transition to extended support begins.

The company is encouraging organizations to start planning upgrades to Windows Server 2025, which is now the latest LTSC version of its server operating system. Windows Server 2025 became generally available in November 2024 after an early preview period through the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft says upgrading will ensure customers continue receiving full mainstream support while keeping their environments secure and fully supported.

Support for Windows Server 2025 is scheduled to end on November 13, 2029, with extended support continuing until November 14, 2034. Businesses that want to evaluate the latest release before deployment can download a free 180-day trial from the Microsoft Evaluation Center.

Microsoft also recommends reviewing Windows lifecycle information through its Lifecycle Policy search tool and Windows Lifecycle FAQ to prepare for upcoming support deadlines. The company recently announced that Windows Server 2022 hotpatching for Datacenter: Azure Edition systems will remain available until October 2027, extending the feature one year beyond the product’s mainstream support end date.

It also recently extended the free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers by another year and reminded users that Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 and the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 will stop receiving updates three months after reaching the end of their respective support periods.
