Microsoft is preparing to enable its Memory Integrity security feature on more Windows 11 PCs starting next month.
The kernel-level protection is designed to prevent malicious code and untrusted drivers from running on a Windows 11 machine, although Microsoft has previously warned that it can affect gaming performance.
According to Microsoft, upcoming Windows quality updates will enable Memory Integrity on eligible devices where the feature is not already turned on. The updates will also enable Virtualization-based Security, or VBS, on systems that need it, allowing Windows to provide additional security protections by default.
Memory Integrity works by allowing only trusted kernel-mode code and drivers to run on the system. While this can improve protection against certain threats, it can also affect PC gaming performance on some hardware. The impact is generally smaller on newer processors, while older CPUs may experience noticeable frame-rate drops in certain games.
Microsoft says the upcoming updates will not automatically turn Memory Integrity back on for users who have previously disabled it. This means gamers who turned the feature off to improve performance will not suddenly find it re-enabled after next month’s updates.
Windows 11 users can check their current Memory Integrity setting by searching for “Core Isolation” in Windows Search and opening the corresponding Windows Security page. The feature can be turned on or off from there. Microsoft recommends keeping Memory Integrity enabled for better security and turning it back on after gaming if it has been temporarily disabled to improve performance.
