Tech giant Microsoft has removed the long-standing 32GB size limit for FAT32 partitions in the latest Canary build, allowing users to format drives up to 2TB.
The Windows Insider team announced this change and is now available in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27686, exclusively for Canary Channel users.
For years, Windows imposed an artificial 32GB cap on FAT32 partitions when formatting drives via the command line. While Windows could read larger FAT32 partitions created through alternative methods—like using PowerShell with admin privileges or third-party tools—this new update allows users to easily create partitions up to 2TB without needing any workarounds.
This enhancement will eventually roll out to all Windows 11 users once it reaches the stable channel. However, it’s worth noting that the graphical user interface (GUI) for disk formatting in Windows will continue to impose the 32GB limit, meaning users will still need to use the command line to take full advantage of the 2TB capacity.
