Shopify experienced a major outage earlier today, which left many merchants unable to process transactions during one of the busiest online shopping days of the year.

The issue was especially disruptive because customers around the world were actively hunting for Cyber Monday deals, and many businesses rely on Shopify to keep sales running smoothly. According to the company’s status page, the problem has now been identified and fixed.

The trouble started around 6:45 a.m. PT when some merchants reported they could not log into their Shopify accounts. Many also encountered problems with the point-of-sale systems, which made it impossible to complete purchases in stores using Shopify’s POS tools. Because Shopify powers millions of online businesses and accounts for more than 10% of all e-commerce transactions in the United States, the disruption caused widespread concern among merchants and shoppers.

Shopify later confirmed that the root of the outage came from an issue in its login authentication flow. This problem affected both the online dashboard and POS logins. The company announced that systems are now recovering and that it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure everything remains stable. Shopify also warned that its Help Center was experiencing unusually long wait times as many merchants reached out for assistance.
