Apple announced a major change in its leadership today as John Giannandrea, the company’s senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is stepping down from his role.
He will continue to advise Apple for a short period and is set to retire in the spring of 2026. As part of this transition, Apple confirmed that respected AI expert Amar Subramanya has joined the company as vice president of AI and will report directly to Craig Federighi. He will take charge of important areas such as Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation, while the remaining parts of Giannandrea’s team will shift to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue.
Giannandrea has been one of the key figures behind Apple’s AI efforts since joining the company in 2018. Over the years, he built a strong team and helped develop many of Apple’s core AI technologies, including its foundation models, search systems, machine learning research programs, and the infrastructure that powers Apple’s AI features. His work has played a central role in shaping Apple’s long-term approach to artificial intelligence.
Subramanya brings deep experience to Apple, having previously worked as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. Before that, he spent 16 years at Google, where he led engineering for the Google Gemini Assistant. His strong background in both AI research and product development is expected to help Apple move faster as it builds new AI features across its ecosystem, including future updates to Apple Intelligence.
Tim Cook thanked Giannandrea for his contributions and said he helped Apple continue to innovate and improve the user experience. He also welcomed Subramanya to the team, noting that Craig Federighi has been playing a major role in Apple’s AI efforts, including the work to bring a more personalized version of Siri to users next year. With these leadership changes, Apple appears ready to push its AI development even further. The company says it is entering an exciting new chapter as it focuses on creating intelligent, trusted, and highly personal experiences for people around the world.
