OpenAI has decided to remove a controversial feature in ChatGPT that allowed certain conversations to become publicly searchable on the internet.
The tool, which recently gained attention online, exposed public logs where users appeared to reveal sensitive information — including potential criminal confessions, trade secrets, and other private content.
The feature’s viral spread raised privacy and security concerns, as these public logs became accessible to anyone who knew how to find them. Dane Stuckey, OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer, announced on X that the feature would be disabled starting Friday morning.
The company did not elaborate on how many conversations were exposed or how long the feature had been active, but the move marks a significant shift as OpenAI continues to navigate the balance between transparency and user safety.
