Coupang founder and chairman Kim Bom has apologised for the first time over a recent customer data leak and said the company will announce a compensation plan as soon as possible.
Speaking in Korean, Kim said he sincerely apologizes to customers affected by the data breach, which was first made public in November.
He also promised new investments and internal reforms to strengthen data security and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Coupang stated that it has worked closely with the South Korean government throughout the investigation. Kim stated that all leaked personal information has now been restored. He confirmed that data belonging to about 3,000 customers out of 33 million users had been saved by a suspect on a personal computer, but was not shared or sold to any third party.
The company did not provide details on the amount of compensation customers may receive, but Kim said an official plan for South Korean users will be announced soon. South Korean lawmakers are also considering legal action against Kim, arguing that Coupang should be held accountable under local laws.
