OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT with a new group chat feature that lets users bring up to 20 people into a shared conversation with the AI chatbot.

The rollout is now global and available to all logged-in users across the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, following a limited pilot earlier this month.

The company says group chats are designed to help people work together when planning events, organizing trips, brainstorming ideas, or drafting documents. To start a group conversation, users can tap the “people” icon in the top-right corner of the ChatGPT app. The tool creates a copy of the current chat and turns it into a group thread, where participants can join through a shareable link. ChatGPT will also ask new group chat users to pick a name, username, and photo so conversations are easier to follow.

OpenAI says it has trained ChatGPT to naturally follow the flow of a group discussion, stepping in only when helpful. Anyone can directly mention “ChatGPT” to prompt a response. The AI can also react with emojis and use profile photos when generating personalized images or outputs.

A dedicated settings menu in the top-right corner allows users to add or remove participants, mute notifications, and set custom instructions for ChatGPT. OpenAI notes that memories stored from private conversations will not be used in group chats, and the chatbot will not create new memories based on group messages.

Group chats run on GPT-5.1 Auto, a system that automatically selects the best model available to the user for each response. Rate limits only apply when ChatGPT itself sends a message, not when human participants are chatting among themselves.
