WhatsApp is releasing a new update that brings back a familiar idea in a fresh way.

The app is adding a feature similar to Instagram Notes, allowing users to post short text updates that others can easily see. These updates can be used to share what you are doing, how you are feeling, or anything small you want others to notice. They can even work as conversation starters or a quick way to explain why you might not be available to chat.

WhatsApp says this feature, called About status, is actually one of the very first things the app offered when it launched years ago. Before it became a popular messaging platform focused on privacy, WhatsApp allowed people to write short updates like this to let others know what was going on in their lives.

With this new version, the About status will be much more visible than it used to be. It will now appear at the top of individual chats and on user profiles. If someone posts an About status, you can tap on it directly from a chat and send a reply in seconds.

By default, the status disappears after one day, just like Instagram Notes. But WhatsApp gives users the option to change how long it stays visible. You can choose to make it disappear sooner or remain longer than 24 hours. You can also control who gets to see it, whether it is only your contacts or a wider audience.

Right now, the feature is more basic than Instagram Notes, which also allows short looping videos and lets you share the music you are listening to. If many people start using the WhatsApp version, the company may add more advanced options in the future.
