Microsoft is preparing to give Office users more control over the floating Copilot button that recently appeared in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The button, which sits near the bottom-right area of documents, slides, and spreadsheets, has frustrated many users, especially in Excel, where it can cover cells and interrupt work.

The company says new Office app updates rolling out next week will allow users to move the Copilot button back to the ribbon instead of keeping it floating on top of their files. The option will be available by right-clicking the Dynamic Action Button.

Microsoft had already offered a dock option to make the floating Copilot button smaller, but that did not fully solve the problem for users who wanted it out of the way completely. The new setting should make the button less intrusive while still keeping Copilot accessible for those who use it.

Katie Kivett, partner group product manager at Microsoft, said the company has seen more engagement with Copilot inside Office apps but has also heard from users who want more control over how it appears. Microsoft says it plans to make Copilot more adaptive and flexible over time, but the upcoming change is meant to address user feedback in the short term.

The move comes shortly after Microsoft began removing some unnecessary Copilot buttons from Windows 11 apps. After adding Copilot across many parts of Windows and Office, the company now appears to be adjusting its approach as users push back against features that feel more intrusive than helpful.
