Google will update its Shocking Content policy on August 30, 2023, to include an exception for gameplay imagery.
This means that content that depicts violence in the context of gameplay will no longer be considered shocking, as long as it does not depict acts of torture, sexual violence, violence against minors, violence against prominent real-name persons, or violence against an individual or group on the basis of a characteristic that is associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization.
This update is intended to provide more clarity for publishers who create content that includes gameplay imagery. Publishers who believe that their site or app was previously restricted from serving ads due to Shocking Content but should no longer be restricted following the update may request a review or appeal on or after August 30, 2023.
