A widespread outage in Google Cloud services caused major disruptions on Thursday afternoon, affecting Spotify, Google Home, Nest devices, and several other online platforms that rely on cloud infrastructure.
Users attempting to access Spotify encountered errors, such as “Audiences in Jwt are not allowed,” and many reported connectivity issues with smart home setups.
The root of the issue appears to be tied to a problem with Google Cloud’s Identity and Access Management (IAM) service, which started around 1:51 PM ET. Google confirmed that multiple products were impacted, including Google App Engine, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Vertex AI, Firestore, and more. The outage hit services globally but remained most severe in the central US region (us-central1), including parts of Michigan.
Error reports also surfaced from platforms like Twitch, Snapchat, Shopify, Anthropic, Discord, and Replit — all of which rely on Google Cloud to some extent. Replit CEO Amjad Masad acknowledged the issue on X (formerly Twitter), stating that their platform was down due to the Google Cloud outage and that they were working closely with Google on recovery.
Cloudflare also reported service interruptions due to its limited use of Google Cloud, but emphasized that its core infrastructure remained unaffected. By late afternoon, both Google and Cloudflare reported gradual recovery, although intermittent errors could still occur as systems normalize.
Google engineers have applied mitigations and identified the root cause but have not provided a full ETA for recovery. The next official update is expected by 1:30 PM PDT on Thursday, June 12.
