Google is expanding its Gemini AI assistant to the living room.
After recently removing the membership fee for Gemini in Chrome and introducing new browser features, the company has now announced that Gemini will be available on Google TV.
The rollout begins today with TCL’s new QM9K series TVs and will expand to additional TVs and streaming devices running Google TV later this year.
Gemini on Google TV will handle the same basic commands as Google Assistant, such as playing a specific show or movie when asked. But it goes a step further by allowing “free-flowing conversations” with the AI. That means you can search for shows based on vague descriptions, get recommendations based on everyone’s genre preferences, or even ask for a recap if you’re behind on a series.
Google says you can activate Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or pressing the mic button on your remote. Once active, you can ask for trending shows, request recommendations, or go beyond entertainment with questions like “why do volcanoes erupt” or “what dessert can I make in less than an hour?” Gemini will respond with spoken answers and also suggest related YouTube videos.
In addition to the TCL QM9K series, Google confirmed that Gemini will be available on the Google TV Streamer 4K, Walmart Onn 4K Pro, and several 2025 models of Hisense and TCL TVs. The move puts Google in direct competition with Samsung and LG, both of which announced at CES 2025 that they will bring Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant to their new smart TVs launching this year.
