OpenAI has announced a major partnership with Nvidia to build a massive AI infrastructure that will power its future models.
The deal, revealed on Monday, will give the ChatGPT-maker more compute power and funding as it pushes toward developing superintelligent systems.
Under the agreement, OpenAI will build at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centers using Nvidia systems, which means millions of GPUs working together to run its advanced models. Nvidia has also committed to progressively investing up to $100 billion in OpenAI as each gigawatt of infrastructure is deployed. The companies said final details will be completed in the coming weeks.
Nvidia will now act as OpenAI’s preferred strategic compute and networking partner. “Everything starts with compute,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we’re building with NVIDIA to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.” OpenAI also shared that ChatGPT has reached 700 million weekly active users, showing the growing demand for its technology.
The announcement comes as OpenAI continues to expand beyond its long-standing partnership with Microsoft. While Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI, it no longer holds exclusive rights to provide computing power. Instead, it only has a “right of first refusal” on new deals. In recent months, OpenAI has signed a $300 billion cloud computing agreement with Oracle and started building its own data centers. Earlier this month, OpenAI and Microsoft signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to update their collaboration as the relationship evolves.
Industry reports suggest Microsoft and OpenAI have faced disagreements over an “AGI clause” in their contract. That clause could limit Microsoft’s earnings if OpenAI develops artificial general intelligence, or AI systems that match or surpass human intelligence.
