Microsoft has started testing video wallpapers for Windows 11, allowing users to set video files such as MP4 or MKV as their desktop background.
The videos play automatically whenever the desktop is viewed, similar to popular third-party apps like Wallpaper Engine.
This is not the first time Microsoft has experimented with video wallpapers. A similar feature called DreamScene was available in Windows Vista’s Ultimate edition, but was discontinued with Windows 7. Video wallpapers remain a highly requested feature, with apps like Wallpaper Engine consistently ranking among the top 10 most played apps and games on Steam due to their popularity.

Microsoft has been exploring dynamic animated wallpapers for Windows 11 for several years. Earlier designs revealed what these wallpapers would look like, and they were originally expected to launch in 2023, but the feature did not make it into the official release.
Recent testing indicates that Microsoft is once again moving forward with introducing video wallpapers to Windows 11.
