Samsung has unveiled its new P9 and P7 portable SSDs with USB4 connectivity, targeting users who need faster storage for high-resolution video, AI-generated content, large games and other data-heavy workloads.
The flagship P9 delivers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s. Samsung says the performance is roughly twice as fast as its previous-generation portable SSDs, including the T9, which reaches speeds of up to 2,000MB/s.
To reach the P9’s maximum performance, users will need a device with a native USB4 or Thunderbolt 4/5 port. With compatible hardware, the drive is designed for demanding professional workflows, including large RAW files, ultra-high-resolution video and direct 12K recording.
Samsung is also highlighting the P9’s storage capacity. The drive is available with up to 8TB of storage, making it the company’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD capable of reaching speeds of up to 4,000MB/s. The P9 previously received a CES 2026 Innovation Award.
Samsung has also introduced the P7, a more versatile USB4 portable SSD aimed at everyday users. It supports a wide range of devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and cameras.
The P7 has completed 2-meter drop testing as well as shock and vibration durability tests. Samsung says the durability features are designed to help protect data when the drive is used during travel, outdoor activities and other mobile situations.

The Samsung P9 starts at $339.99 for the 1TB model, while the 8TB version costs $2,699.99. Sales are scheduled to begin on August 31, 2026.
