After a recent wave of bans on Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta users are now reporting that Facebook Groups are being hit by mass suspensions, too.
According to complaints shared across Reddit and other platforms, thousands of groups in the U.S. and internationally have been removed, including ones focused on everyday topics like parenting, pets, gaming, and even budget tips.
A Meta spokesperson, Andy Stone, confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is aware of the issue, calling it a “technical error” and saying Meta is working on a fix. However, the exact reason behind the mass bans has not been officially explained. Many users suspect that AI-based moderation tools are wrongly flagging groups for violations they didn’t commit.
Group admins say they’ve received vague violation messages accusing their groups of promoting things like terrorism or nudity, even in communities focused on safe and family-friendly content. Some examples include a Pokémon group with nearly 200,000 members, a bird photography group flagged for nudity, and an interior design group with millions of users accused of supporting “dangerous organizations.”
Many admins are warning others not to appeal the bans right away and instead wait to see if Meta automatically restores access once the issue is resolved. Some users with a Meta Verified subscription — which includes priority customer support — have reportedly had better luck getting help, but others say their groups have been suspended or permanently removed.
While it’s still unclear whether this is connected to the previous ban wave affecting individual users, it adds to growing concerns over how automated moderation systems are affecting creators, communities, and even small businesses. A petition asking Meta to fix the issue has already gained over 12,000 signatures, and some users are even considering legal action.
