Users of Google Chrome will no longer be able to use older ad-blocking extensions built on Manifest V2 starting with version 151, which is expected to roll out in July.

According to reports from 9to5Google, Chrome versions 150 and 151 will remove the final workarounds that allowed some legacy extensions to continue functioning.

Google began phasing out Manifest V2 support in 2024, prompting many users to switch to Manifest V3-compatible alternatives such as uBlock Origin Lite or move to browsers that continue to support older extension standards.

With Chrome 151, Google is removing the remaining code related to the Manifest V2 platform, meaning only extensions built for Manifest V3 will work going forward.

Chromium developer Devlin Cronin said the company can no longer maintain Manifest V2 functionality because of its complexity, accumulated technical debt, and security concerns. He noted that Google has recently identified several bugs that affect only Manifest V2 extensions.

While Google is ending support in Chrome, other browsers remain free to continue supporting Manifest V2 extensions if they choose.
