OpenAI has announced that it is removing limits on text-based conversations for all ChatGPT users, following the platform’s recent milestone of surpassing one billion weekly users.

The update introduces the new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which will become the default experience for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5.

With the rollout, Free and Go users will also receive a new “Think” button that allows them to use higher reasoning capabilities when tackling more complex questions. While text conversations will become unlimited, OpenAI noted that separate usage limits will continue to apply to file uploads, image generation, voice interactions, and other multimodal features.

The company is also bringing improvements to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers through an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model. According to OpenAI, this version is optimized for everyday tasks such as answering questions, browsing the web, planning, writing, offering advice, and helping users make decisions. It is designed to provide more compact and reliable responses. OpenAI clarified that this updated GPT-5.6 Sol is separate from the version currently powering Codex and Work, which remains unchanged.

In addition, Plus and Pro users are getting a new thinking slider that lets them control how much reasoning the model applies before generating an answer. This gives users the flexibility to choose faster responses for simple requests or deeper reasoning for more challenging problems.

OpenAI said its internal testing showed significant improvements in accuracy over GPT-5.5 Instant. The company reported that factual errors were reduced by 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna and by 68% with GPT-5.6 Sol.
