Opera has surpassed 100 million monthly active users on desktop for the first time, marking a major milestone for the browser company.

The achievement was reached in October 2026, with desktop users now accounting for more than one-third of Opera’s nearly 290 million total monthly active users.

The company announced the milestone in a blog post, thanking its users for supporting its growth and highlighting its efforts to become a stronger alternative to pre-installed browsers. Opera said it is particularly focused on attracting users in regions such as Europe and North America, where many people continue using the default browsers that come with their devices.

Opera has been expanding its browser lineup to appeal to different types of users rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. Its flagship Opera One browser focuses on productivity and customization, while Opera GX targets gamers. Opera Air is designed around digital wellbeing, and Opera Neon offers an AI-powered browsing experience built around agentic capabilities.

The company also highlighted several recent developments aimed at improving browser functionality, privacy and security. In September 2026, Opera introduced an automatic connection feature for its free VPN, allowing it to activate when users connect to public Wi-Fi networks.

Opera also released Paste Protect, an in-browser security feature designed to defend against ClickFix-powered attacks that attempt to trick users into executing malicious commands through clipboard-based techniques.

In October, the company introduced WebAI, which allows users to run local AI models directly within the browser without relying entirely on cloud-based AI services.

Opera said the way people use web browsers has changed significantly over the past decade, making continued improvements in user experience, privacy, security, design and functionality increasingly important.

With desktop monthly active users now exceeding 100 million, Opera plans to continue developing new features and browser technologies as it competes with established alternatives in the global browser market.
