OpenAI is testing a combined Chat and Work experience in ChatGPT that would let users move from everyday conversations to more complex tasks without switching modes.

The company described the planned test in an email to subscribers seen by BleepingComputer, saying a small group of users will try the experience in the coming weeks.

In the test, users will be able to bring files and plugins into a conversation and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or carry out tasks on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. The aim is to make Work’s more involved, agent-style capabilities available directly from the regular Chat interface.

OpenAI also plans to combine usage allowances across ChatGPT and Codex. The email says Unlimited Instant is included and will not count toward the shared allowance, while more advanced models and complex tasks will consume more of it. Users will be able to check their remaining combined usage and reset times under Settings > Usage.

The combined Chat and Work experience is still in testing, and OpenAI has not announced a broader rollout date. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

The planned integration builds on recent changes to ChatGPT’s task tools, including its Chrome extension’s ability to work with open tabs and iCloud Mail and Calendar connections. It is separate from OpenAI’s October 29 increase to Work and Codex allowances for Pro subscribers, which Abijita reported earlier.
