OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome, allowing the AI assistant to use information from open browser tabs to provide more relevant answers and help users complete tasks without switching between multiple windows.
Announced on October 15, the update brings computer-use capabilities to Chrome users, letting ChatGPT work with information across multiple open tabs when users connect Chrome through the ChatGPT web or desktop app. OpenAI demonstrated the feature by asking ChatGPT to compare sofas across three open tabs and help the user decide which option to choose.
A few big upgrades for Chrome users today! We’re bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome. First up: ChatGPT can now use your tabs in Chrome to make answers more useful and get things done for you. If you’re in Chat, it can look across your open tabs and gather info. If you’re in Work, ChatGPT can control your Chrome tabs to get things, like sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files. It can even help you organize and group that pile of tabs you have open.

The update is designed to make ChatGPT more useful for everyday browsing, research, shopping, and productivity. Instead of copying information from several websites into a conversation, users can ask the assistant to examine their open tabs and compare the details directly.
OpenAI shared several examples of how the upgraded extension can be used. Users can ask ChatGPT to extract information from an event brief and fill out a registration form without submitting it, collect vendor pricing and features from multiple tabs into a comparison sheet, or review home renovation contractors and draft an email to the most suitable provider. It can also help fill out forms, such as preparing a dentist registration form before an appointment.
The Chrome extension itself has also received an upgrade. Users can now access their ChatGPT conversation history directly within the browser and work with ChatGPT alongside the website they are visiting. The integrated experience supports asking questions in Chat and using Work to carry out more complex tasks while keeping the current webpage open.
The changes offer a new way to use ChatGPT within an existing browsing workflow, particularly for people who regularly research products, compare services, manage online forms, or gather information from several websites. Tasks that previously required repeatedly switching tabs and manually transferring information can now be handled with a single instruction.
The update also comes after OpenAI discontinued its ChatGPT Atlas browser, shifting attention toward bringing AI-powered browsing features into the Chrome browser that users already have installed.
However, users should remain careful when allowing AI tools to work with browser content, especially when open tabs contain private messages, financial information, personal records, or confidential work documents. Before asking ChatGPT to interact with a form or website, users should review the information being accessed and check any actions before allowing them to be submitted or completed.
With these improvements, OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT beyond a standalone chatbot and making it a more integrated assistant for web-based research and everyday tasks.
