Apple is reportedly getting ready to boost Siri’s intelligence using a customized version of Google’s Gemini AI model.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will pay Google about $1 billion a year for access to the technology, which will help Siri handle advanced tasks like generating summaries and creating detailed plans.

The report says that Apple will run this special version of Gemini on its Private Cloud Compute servers while still using its own AI models for some Siri functions. The Gemini model is said to have around 1.2 trillion parameters, which is far more powerful than the 150 billion parameters used in Apple’s current cloud-based AI system known as Apple Intelligence.

Apple has been trying to catch up after delays in releasing new AI features for Siri. Earlier this year, reports suggested that Apple had considered using AI models from OpenAI or Anthropic before deciding to partner with Google. This partnership, however, does not include Gemini’s chatbot features, which Apple may add later in a similar way it integrated ChatGPT with Siri.

During a recent investor meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the upgraded Siri is expected to launch next spring. He also hinted that Apple Intelligence could support more third-party AI tools in the future.

While Apple is moving ahead with Google for now, the company still plans to develop its own AI technology, which could eventually replace Gemini in the coming years.
