Amazon might soon deliver your online orders using humanoid robots — robots that look and move like humans.
According to a new report, Amazon is building smart robots that can ride in the back of its Rivian electric vans, jump out, and bring packages right to your door. The company is currently testing this idea at a new indoor training space in San Francisco, which is about the size of a small coffee shop. There’s even a real delivery van inside to help the robots learn.
Amazon has already been using different kinds of robots inside its warehouses for years. Now, it’s taking the next big step — testing whether these robots can work outside too.
The company says it wants to create intelligent machines that can understand voice commands and handle different tasks, not just move boxes. This means the robots could eventually help out in many ways, just like human workers.
One of the robots being tested is from Unitree, a Chinese company, and costs around $16,000. Amazon is also working with Agility Robotics, whose robot “Digit” is already being tested in warehouses.
This project is part of Amazon’s bigger plan to make deliveries faster and more efficiently. In fact, back in 2020, Amazon bought a robotaxi company called Zoox, which shows it’s serious about automating deliveries from start to finish.
