YouTube has begun implementing AI-based age assurance checks for users in the United States starting today.
The system uses artificial intelligence to estimate a viewer’s age based on activity patterns such as watch history, search behavior, and account details, rather than relying solely on the birthdate entered during sign-up.
If the system determines a user is under 18, YouTube will automatically apply safeguards including turning off personalized ads, restricting mature content, limiting recommendations to age-appropriate videos, and enabling digital wellbeing features like screen-time reminders.
Users who believe they’ve been misclassified can appeal by providing a government-issued ID, a credit card, or a selfie for verification. However, the process has raised privacy concerns, with experts questioning how sensitive data will be stored and protected.
