YouTube is trying to calm creators after backlash over its upcoming update to monetization rules, set to start on July 15, 2025.

Many creators were worried that the new rules would ban videos made with AI, reaction clips, or reused content from making money.

YouTube says that’s not the case. The update is meant to identify better spammy, low-effort videos that are mass-produced or repetitive. These types of videos were already not allowed to earn money under YouTube’s rules.

“YouTube has always required content to be original and authentic,” the company said. The new policy just explains that more clearly.

YouTube’s editorial head Rene Ritchie called the change a “minor update” and said it won’t affect reaction videos or videos using clips, as long as they follow the platform’s guidelines.

To help creators understand, YouTube published a support document answering common questions. It confirmed that no major rules are changing, especially around reaction or commentary videos.

Some users online thought YouTube might ban all AI-generated videos from making money. YouTube cleared that up, too, saying AI can still be used if the content meets all the usual rules for originality and quality.

The full updated policy hasn’t been released yet. But YouTube hopes the changes will help clean up spammy videos that are filling up the platform, especially those made with stolen clips and AI voiceovers.
