Elon Musk said on Saturday that X will make its recommendation algorithm public within the next seven days, including the full code used for both organic posts and advertising.
According to Musk, the platform plans to release updates every four weeks, accompanied by detailed developer notes that explain the changes between updates.
The announcement comes as X continues to face growing regulatory pressure in Europe over how its algorithms operate. Earlier this week, the European Commission extended a data retention order originally issued to X last year. The order, which focuses on algorithms and the spread of illegal content, has now been extended through the end of 2026, according to a Commission spokesperson.
We will make the new 𝕏 algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users, open source in 7 days.

This will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed.
X has also been under legal scrutiny in France. In July 2025, Paris prosecutors launched an investigation into the platform over allegations of algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction. At the time, X described the probe as a politically motivated criminal investigation that posed a threat to free speech on the platform.
Regulatory action escalated further last month when the European Union fined X €120 million for violating transparency requirements under the Digital Services Act. Regulators said the company failed to meet its obligations related to its blue checkmark subscription system, the transparency of its advertising repository, and access to public platform data for researchers.
Musk reacted angrily to the fine, responding with an obscene comment under a European Commission post announcing the penalty. Despite the tensions, Musk’s pledge to release X’s algorithm code appears aimed at demonstrating greater transparency as regulators continue to scrutinize how the platform operates.
